Spoke Hollow

Conservation Project: Spoke Hollow Ranch

As with many ranches, Spoke Hollow is covered with Ashe Juniper (or Mountain Cedar, as it is more commonly called). Ashe Juniper is native to the Texas Hill Country and plays a valuable role – providing habitat and food for wildlife, nourishing the soil, and stabilizing the terrain.

In absence of natural constraints to its growth (such as fire or buffalo), the Ashe Juniper may become overgrown. The partnership between Wild Spirit Wild Places, Spoke Hollow, and Desert Door used strategic clearing practices at Spoke Hollow to restore the natural balances of Ashe Juniper. Removing Ashe Juniper is necessary to maintain the aquifers that feed groundwater on the ranch, sustain a healthy terrain, and support the needs of native wildlife.
