Pollinators

What’s the buzz?

Conservation is a core value for Wild Spirit Wild Places and our founding entity, Desert Door. Each year we partner to complete a signature conservation project that promotes responsible stewardship in the great state of Texas. This year, we are shining a light on Texas bees and pollinators, which are experiencing a rapid decline in population.

About the Project

Native plants provide the pollen and nectar that are the primary food source for bees, thus planting more of them is one simple solution to this serious issue. To promote the health of these humble, but critical, pollinators, Wild Spirit Wild Places has partnered with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Research, the City of Austin, and many local community members to make Austin a certified bee city. Alongside our presenting sponsor, Desert Door, we are working to uphold this designation by planting pollinator gardens to preserve our bee population. The mesquite, persimmon, and honeysuckle featured in Desert Door’s special Conservation Series bottle release (aptly named Pollinator) are all native to Texas and pollinated by native bee species.

Conservation is a core value for Wild Spirit Wild Places and our founding entity, Desert Door. Each year we partner to complete a signature conservation project that promotes responsible stewardship in the great state of Texas. In this project, we chose to shine a light on Texas bees and pollinators, which are experiencing a rapid decline in population.

To tell this story, Desert Door commissioned Saltbox Films to create a short documentary film highlighting individuals and organizations across Austin taking remarkable action in conservation and stewardship to support Austin becoming an official Bee City.

We’re excited to share how you can support native pollinators!

Telling the Story

Pollinator Gardens

We have already planted several pollinator gardens around the Austin area. Check out the City of Austin’s Grow Green page for more on how to  create your own!

Field Guide

Our pollinator focused Conservation Field Guide will feature more opportunities to learn about native bees, native plants, and how you can help preserve these incredible creatures. Learn more about our efforts .

Get Involved

While we are thrilled to partner with local businesses, the City of Austin, and the Xerces Society, we need the help of the entire community to support bees and native pollinators. One of the best ways you can support:

PLANT NATIVE PLANTS!

This is the simplest and most effective way for you to help. Join our effort by signing up for our emails or becoming a member. We have opportunities coming up and will need volunteers to install new gardens!
